How does Holiday Sponsorship Work?
Want to know how to become a family sponsor this holiday season? It's as easy as 1-2-3!
1. Become a Holiday Sponsor After reading through ALL of the guidelines for Holiday Sponsorship below, you will fill out a brief online form with your information. An agency team member or volunteer will respond to your request as soon as possible and will assign you your family wishlist! After that, you get to go shopping and pick out the items for the family based on their wishes! |
2. Go to Wrapping Day! Be sure you have all of your holiday shopping done and your gifts ready by Sunday, December 17th 2023 for WRAPPING DAY. On this day, Agency staff members will look over and approve gift items. Then, there will be wrapping and card making stations available for YOU to get your gifts ready to be delivered to the family in time for the holidays! |
3. Gift Deliveries! At the end of wrapping day, assigned drivers will arrive and pick-up all of the now wrapped gifts to have them distributed out to the families before Christmas day arrives. If you are not an active background check approved volunteer, then you are not able to deliver gifts. For more information about becoming a volunteer, check out our volunteer page! |
Guidelines for Holiday Sponsorship
Please read the following guidelines before submitting an application to sponsor a family. If you have are concerned about meeting any of the guidelines, please reach out to Olivia at owargo@jannus.org to discuss alternate options.
1. Spending Guidelines
For individuals signing up to sponsor a family, please prepare to spend around $100 per individual within the family. When filling out the form to apply to sponsor a family, select the family size that your budget is able to support.
2. Large Items
Some of our clients wrote in quite a few large items (cars, couches, etc.) into their personal wishlists. It is not an expectation for you to fulfill requests of all items on the list. Please stick to the $80-100 rule when selecting which of the wishlist items to purchase for individuals.
3. No Toy Weapons
Do not purchase any toys that resemble weapons (nerf guns, water guns, etc.) For this reason, all gifts must be checked and approved by Agency team members before being wrapped at the wrapping party. Agency team members have the final say on what items resemble weapons and cannot be given to families. This is to protect our client's well-being as we utilize trauma informed care with all of our services.
4. Gifts must be purchased and ready for drop-off on Sunday, December 17th, 2023 between 3pm - 5:30pm for WRAPPING DAY. On this day, Agency staff members will look over and approve gift items. Then, there will be wrapping and card making stations where YOU can wrap up the gifts and get them ready to be delivered to the family. Feel free to bring your own wrapping paper!
5. If you are unavailable to stay and wrap gifts on WRAPPING DAY, please place all your purchased gifts in a box or large garbage bag and please clearly label with the NUMBER of the family you were assigned. If specific gifts are for specific family members, be sure to label the gifts with the names too. Contact Olivia to coordinate dropping off the items to the Agency office prior to wrapping day to ensure the items are delivered with the rest of the gifts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who do I ask about clarifying specific items on the wish list?
If you are not quite sure what a specifically listed wish list item is, feel free to reach out to anewamericans@gmail.com and we will try to clarify the item for you as quickly as we can. If we are not able to specify the item, we suggest purchasing a gift card to provide to the family instead.
What if my family asked for clothing and shoes but did not give sizes?
If you do not have the family sizes, the best replacement is gift cards! This gives the family a chance to go to the store and pick out exactly what they want themselves, and to be sure they are the right size!
What are the best stores to purchase gift Cards To?
We encourage gift cards to be purchased from Target, Walmart or Winco (these stores are the most convenient for most of the new Americans that we work with!)
How many of the items should I buy for the family?
Stick to the $100 per person rule, and select items that fit within that amount. You are not expected to purchase everything on the wish list. Some individuals may get gift cards and items, some will just get gift cards, and some just items!
If you would like to make a larger wishlist purchase for the family (like a TV or laptop), please reach out to us and we can work through budget details so it continues to be equitable for families.

Can I meet the family that I am sponsoring?
We only allow active background checked volunteers to engage directly with the new Americans we work with. You are welcome to leave your contact information with your gifts (perhaps in a card is a good touch!) and the family can choose to reach out if they would like to meet you. If you are interested in meeting refugee families, reach out to Olivia Wargo at owargo@jannus.org and inquire about becoming a family sponsor!
