Who We Serve

Agency for New Americans (ANA) serves Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) eligible populations which include refugees, asylees, Cuban/Haitian entrants, Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders, and victims of trafficking. ANA also provides support to humanitarian parolees. All of the statuses are different legal forms of entry into the United States.

Important terms in resettlement

Immigrants
An immigrant is anyone who has chosen to live outside their country of origin. All refugees are immigrants, but not all immigrants are refugees! Immigrants are also referred to as "Lawful Permanent Residents."

Special Immigrant Visa (SIV)
SIV's are given to those who worked with the U.S. Armed Forces or under Chief of Mission authority as a translator or interpreter in Iraq or Afghanistan
Refugees
As defined by the United Nations, a refugee is someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion
Cuban/Haitian Entrants
Any individual granted parole status as a Cuban/Haitian entrant or granted any other special status subsequently established under the immigration laws for nationals of Cuba or Haiti.
Asylum Seekers

An asylee is someone who meets the definition of a refugee but is already in the United States or is seeking admission at a port of entry. Immigrants can apply for asylum regardless of their country of origin.

Humanitarian Parolees
Humanitarian Parole is a discretionary grant of temporary permission to enter the United States for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit.
Not all statuses have established pathways to citizenship within the United States, and each status is eligible for different services depending upon federal regulations and the individual's history.
